The food you consume is one of the keys to feeling your best. Working with a dietitian or nutritionist to develop an eating plan that works for you is a good place to start. Make sure to include your favorite foods, and don’t be scared to try something new.
Diet for diabetics include complex carbs, such as beans, brown rice, whole wheat, fruits, vegetables, and lentils. Simple carbs that have been processed, such as sugar, pasta, white bread, flour, and cakes and pastries, should be avoided.
Foods with a low glycemic load (index) cause just a minor rise in blood sugar and are therefore preferable alternatives for diabetics. Glycemic management can help prevent type 2 diabetes complications in the long run.
Practical suggestions
Prepare a snack of chopped veggies, such as carrots, peppers, or celery, for an afternoon snack.
For breakfast, top porridge oats with sliced fruit or berries.
Select 2-3 veggies to include in each meal you prepare, such as onions and pepper in a stir-fry or curry.
Rice or pasta can be replaced with raw spinach leaves rice (easy to make at home and much cheaper than shop-bought versions)
