This is an exciting time for diabetes patients, as new technology continues to revolutionize how we treat the disease. Several technological breakthroughs expected to be pushed out over the coming years will break new ground in the fight against diabetes according to Dr. Elena Toschi, Staff Physician in the Adult Diabetes Section at Joslin Diabetes Center and Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. One such epic technology is the Novel Bionic Pancreas.
Damiano’s company, Beta Bionics, a for-profit public benefit corporation with a social conscience, raised the funds, largely from institutional investors. “We have placed Beta Bionics on a strong footing for the future and positioned ourselves well for the commercial success we envisage for the [bionic pancreas],” Damiano says, noting that the company has raised more than $120 million in the last ten months
The iLet reflects a highly personal quest for Damiano. Damiano began dedicating himself and his lab to developing a bionic pancreas soon after his son, David, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, so that his son—and millions of other people with the disease—could be freed from the round-the-clock burden of managing a potentially life-threatening disorder on their own.

The most recent clinical trial of Damiano’s gadget, which was funded by Beta Bionics and conducted by Massachusetts General Hospital, began at the end of May 2019 (Another one happened late last year). It lasted two weeks and ten persons with type 1 diabetes took part. While wearing the device, one of them, a young woman, finished the Run To Remember half marathon.
“Thanks @Beta Bionics!” the young woman tweeted after the race. “Your #iLet carried me strong…and across the finish line. Thank you for your #research.”
